About Me

I’m the American-born Chinese behind this blog, and my goal is to become fluent in Mandarin through self-study. Just starting out; a lot to learn about both Mandarin and blogging!

I’m a 90-hou, but raised totally American. All of my family is based in Beijing, and my parents were 1st gen. You can count me as something like 1.5, as I came to the States when I was 5.

Here’s I am!

[Note: I am proud to be yellow, but yeah, a sunset gets most of the credit here.]

My current language skills consist of basic conversation when it comes to food and family, and nodding when it comes to almost anything else. I can recognize the majority of the words in beginner exercise books, but newspapers and novels are way beyond me. My chengyu (those four character idioms) skills are extremely limited, and my writing skills are basically non-existent. If this sounds anything like you, hop on board!

I’ll be sharing anything I find useful in the hopes that it’ll come in handy for someone else as well. Resources, corrections, comments, and questions will be loved and cherished.

Where IS your food blog? 🙂

Well, that’s embarrassing. 😀 When I was writing this page, my food blog was so new that it didn’t have a title, and I completely forgot to put the link in. Thanks a ton for the tip.

It’s under construction (there’s maybe two or three posts, max), but feel free to check it out anyway! Would love your feedback.

I recognized beautiful, familiar San Francisco Chinatown in the photo. Was there only about two weeks ago. Good for you that you want to learn Mandarin. I know how hard it is to learn another language. Wishing you much luck! – andelieya

Hope you enjoyed your trip! I took those photos a few months ago – no editing, just iPhone night photo quality. Thanks for your encouragement. 🙂

Hi! I really enjoy your site so I nominated you for the Liebster Award. If you could answer the questions and let me know that would be awesome!

Wow, thank you! Sorry for this late reply; I haven’t been on WordPress for almost a month now, thought I’m hoping to get back into it soon. I’ll go to take a look at your post!

We’re also trying to learn Mandarin! Well Anita can already speak Cantonese and quite a bit of Mandarin (more than she gives herself credit for!). Whereas me (Toza) I’m trying to learn from absolute scratch so will be keeping an eye out for any tips 🙂 Good luck 加油!

Hi ur site is quite a big help for me.i am a pure filipino and doesnt speak chinese at all.but i was in a chinese school until high school but my chinese is almost equal to zero.anyway thats another story.i can count, and recognize a few characters, can write a little too. But in spite all, i really have a huge interest in learning the language.i downloaded a dictionary with sentence examples and learning them everyday for 3 months now ( thats bec im currently unemployed too and nothing to do everyday, just came to south carolina 8 months now). Being fluent is doubtful for me bec i dont have speech practice or anyone to learn it with. Maybe someone out there who can practice with me.hehe. Anyway i appreciate your sharing lessons.please continue doing so.
